Our surroundings and sense of place can contain sources of identity, history, familiarity and nurture. As the artist travels in new spaces, she attempts to engage in histories of space finding connections between geography and self, spirituality and being. During her visits to new cities and spaces, Broeders investigates the connection between artist, place and community. She engages participants to also explore their connection to history of place by collecting words, histories, and stories through conversations and collected documents. These collected conversations, stories and words are then inscribed as text on rolls of vellum paper upon which the artist walks. The walks performed upon these written texts in graphite create trace drawings and provide a record of the community through the artist as remnant traces of their presence within these spaces.
